Comments by Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, after the tragic Pahargam terrorist attack, have sparked backlash from the political sphere and social media. The attack killed 26 tourists and was said by the Resistance Front (TRF) to be a terrorist organization (LET) linked to the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, a brutal act against a group of innocent tourists has sent shockwaves across the country.
The day after the attack, Vadra suggested that the violence stemmed from a growing gap between Indian Hindus and Muslims, which he believed was being exacerbated by the “Hindutva” agenda of the BJP-led government. Vadra’s claim suggests that terrorists are motivated by this division, linking the attacks to India’s political and social climate.
“In our country, we see this government will talk about Hinduism and ethnic minorities will feel uncomfortable and troubled… If you dissect this kind of terrorist act that happens, if they (terrorists) look at people’s identities, why do they do that?
Social media platforms reacted to Vadra’s comments, with many accusing him of justifying the terrorist act and providing cover for groups like Let. Several outstanding figures and daily users all participated in X to express their anger.
BJP leader Amit Malviya also condemned Vadra’s remarks to X, writing: “Shocking! Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra shamelessly defended an act of terrorists, providing cover to terrorists rather than condemning them. Instead, he kept blaming India for India to blame terrorists and terrorists for terrorists.”
Shehzad Poonawala, another BJP leader, responded sharply to Vadra’s comments on X: “Even as we mourn for our deep loss in #PahalgamTerroristAttack Congress is back to what it does best: defend Pakistan-sponsored Islamic Jihad, blow Hindus, and divide the nation. Robert Vadra, on the instructions of Sonia & Rahul Gandhi, has started: 1) giving a clean 2) Blaming Hindutva, 3) Proving the actions of terrorist organizations through “legal causes”, 4) On 26/11, Pakistan will not use this on international platforms.
“It looks like he is the official spokesperson for Islamic terrorists! Please educate him that for Islamic terrorists, their religion is the first priority and they are ready to kill every Kafir who does not match their beliefs. This is the same family in the world, not India.”
Another user responded to a similar view, adding: “In a plot twist that no one asked for, Robert Vadra turned to a horrible defense attorney sponsored by Pakistan.
Analysts say Vadra’s comments masked the dialogue surrounding the tragedy as India continues to mourn Pahalgam’s innocent lives, which exacerbates allegations of political opportunism and ideology consistent with groups trying to destabilize the country, analysts said.
