Karimnagar Pet Shop faces FIR behind Maneka Gandhi’s call

Karimnagar: In a major step in animal welfare in the city, a local pet shop in the Geeta Bhavan area of Karimnagar was again under legal scrutiny on Tuesday to put birds and rabbits in an inhumane state. Despite complaints and FIRs against the store in the past, no permanent lawsuit was taken. However, a recent complaint by Kotala Sri Vidhya, an animal welfare activist linked to the Indian Strolling Animal Foundation, followed by a follow-up to a well-known animal rights advocate and former coalition minister Maneka Gandhi.

Maneka contacted the town II police inspector directly and urged an immediate legal action. In response, police obtained court permission to submit the first information report (FIR) to the store owner. A police team moved in to catch the animals and authorities confirmed that custody procedures would be filed in court.

This is the third FIR proposed by the same agency with similar crimes. Previous complaints, including one from Adulapuram Goutham, also resulted in animal rescue and temporary stores closures. Sri Vidhya reported in her recent complaint that the store left birds in a narrow fence with insufficient ventilation and violated multiple animal protection laws.

Activists are now calling for stricter action. “Repeated cruelty cannot be considered an isolated incident. Permanent legal consequences are crucial to preventing such violations,” Sri Vidhya said.
