Pakistan’s Hindu minister attacks protesters against government canal project in Sindh province

A Pakistani Hindu minister was attacked in Sindh by protesters opposing the federal government’s controversial irrigation canal project, with the excuse that it would reduce downward flow of rivers irrigated in the southern province. The government’s Minister of Religious Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Kheal Das Kohistani, tucked into the province with tomatoes and potatoes on Saturday, driving through the Thatta district of the province.

Officials said kohistani was not injured in the attack.

Prime Minister Shehbaz strongly condemned the attack on Kohistani and assured him that a thorough investigation into the incident was conducted.
“Assault on public representatives is unacceptable. Those involved in the incident will be punished by example,” he said.

Kohistani is a member of Pakistan Muslim Union Nawaz (PML-N), and protesters are also chanting slogans against the party’s federal government.

Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar also noticed the incident and announced the “attack”. He also sought details on the incident from the report of Inspector General of Sindh Province (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon and the Federal Home Secretary. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also strongly condemned the act. He said in his statement that no one has the right to take the law into his own hands.

He directed the Deputy Inspector General of Hyderabad Regional Police to immediately arrest the wrongful acts involved in the attack and submit a report.

According to personal details on the National Assembly website, Kohistani is from the Jamshoro district of Sindh Province, and he was elected to the PML-N vote for the first time in 2018.

After a full five-year term, he was re-elected in 2024 and nodded to become the Minister of State.

The federal government announced that there is a proposal to build six canals in Punjab to irrigate land in the Holistan region under the Green Pakistan initiative, a project supported by a strong army, the federal government and the Punjab government.

However, various political parties and nationalist groups in Sindh have been protesting the project, demanding that the canal reduce downstream flow of water and adversely affect irrigation in the province.

The attackers are protesting against the proposed canal.
