Mumbai police have arrested a female dentist in Kolkata in connection with trafficking of two children, an official said on Saturday.
Last week, a team from the Vadala Truck Terminal Police Department arrested the defendant Reshma Santosh Kumar Banerjee and rescued a two-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, the official said.
According to police, a contractor filed a complaint with them in May 2024 about the kidnapping of his daughter, son and grandson.
The official said the investigation showed that the complainant’s son sold the child to defendants Asma Shaikh, Sharif Shaikh and Asha Pawar for Rs 1.6 lakh.
He said police subsequently arrested the child’s father and three other defendants, who told police that they had sold the boy to a woman at the Bhubaneswar railway station in Odisha.
On April 5 this year, police received information about the woman working in a dental hospital in Bhubaneshwar and upon arriving in the city, they discovered her identity and whereabouts in Kolkata.
Police seized the defendant woman and rescued the complainant’s grandson and an unidentified three-year-old girl.
The official said the defendant’s woman and child were taken to Mumbai and she was arrested on April 13.
