Personal life
Azim Hashim Premji was born on July 24, 1945 in Mumbai and was originally from a Muslim family in Gujarat. He is the son of Muhammed Hashim Premji, known as the “King of Burmese Rice” for his significant control over the rice trade in Myanmar (now Myanmar) in the 1940s. In 1999, Premji received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1999 through the distance learning model, decades after withdrawing from the college in 1966. He married Yasmeen Premji, the couple has two sons, Rishad and Tariq.

Business and work
Premji took over West India Vegetable Products Co., Ltd. at the age of 21 after his father’s death. The company was handling hydrogenated oil, grease, toiletries, lighting and hydraulic cylinders at the time. In the 1980s, Premji shifted the company’s focus from IBM’s exit from India to IT services. Under his guidance, Wipro continues to be a global technology giant specializing in software development, consulting and outsourcing services.
Premji was the chairman of the company from 1966 to 2019 and is now its founder chairman and non-executive member.

Charity and Awards
Premji is known for his philanthropy and contributions in various departments. Some of the most outstanding organizations he has established include the Azim Premji Foundation and the Azim Premji University.
In 2013, Premji committed to donating at least half of his wealth, often known as one of the most generous philanthropists in India and the world. The billionaire once said: “Those of us who are fortunate to have wealth should make a significant contribution to creating a better world.”
