Kolkata hotel fire: Mamata promises strict action against fire safety violations

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday that severe action will be taken against those responsible for the deaths of 15 people during the devastating fire at the Myanmar hotel on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Kolkata police arrested the owner and manager of the hotel in connection with the fire today.Banerjee went straight to the mecha area of ​​Burrabazar when he returned from Digha after the inauguration of Jagannath Dhaam, where the fire broke out.
The arrested persons have been identified as Akash Chawla (owner) and Gaurav Kapur (manager).
Banerjee confirmed two arrests and announced the formation of a committee that included representatives from the police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, fire department, which will investigate and monitor compliance with regulations related to fire safety and identify agencies that violate the fire safety code.

Banerjee noted that the committee will be led by Kolkata Mayor Firhaad Hakim of Police Manoj Verma.


“We have saved 90% of the lives of the hotel. When the fire brigade tries to enter and save people’s lives, they can’t find any entrance, people don’t die from fire, but from smoke. The fire system should keep the business while you do business, Banerjee stays back. She added that Banerjee noted that the hotel where the incident happened started operating in 1989 but did not follow regulations related to fire safety.
Banerjee directed police and fire brigades to visit regularly in the area. “If any political party, even its own, is responsible for any illegal activities, it will take strict action,” Banerjee pointed out. “I am very strict in terms of safety and security.”
She noted that several homes in the Burrito are in dilapidated state and will collapse if the renovation is done correctly.

West Bengal chief minister suggested renovations and said: “For people’s lives, renovations should be done, in the burrito shabby houses, transfer residents to some other locations.” It’s about people’s life issues, and if there is no renovation, the building will collapse.
