Police teams investigating the Thiruvathukkal double murder arrested the main suspect of a man from Assam.

The defendant Amit Urang is a native of Assam who worked in Kottayam and was detained by a team led by the district police chief Shahul Hameed. According to officials, Amit fled the scene after the murder, traveling from one area to another. He took the train from Kottayam to Ernakulam and boarded a bus to perumbavoor. From there, he tried to get to Thrissur by another bus. However, his movements were carefully tracked and the police eventually caught up with him in Mala in Thrissur area.

A police official said: “Short after the murder, he checked in a hotel near Kotayam Railway Station in the early morning.

The breakthrough came true when the police began to piece together his travel routes using digital clues. The defendant used the cell phone of one of the victims Vijayakumar, which turned out to be his failure.

“The suspect used Google Services and Gmail on Vijayakumar phones to play a crucial role in tracking his location,” an official said. “We were able to walk along his digital trail and stay behind him as he tried to disappear.”

Vijayakumar, a businessman and his wife Meera were murdered Tuesday morning at their home in Thiruvathukkal. Both were found in separate rooms, lying in pools of blood, with deep injuries caused by sharp weapons on their faces.

Further investigations revealed that Amit had been arrested and detained for nearly five months earlier in the case of financial theft using Vijayakumar’s phone. During his jail time, his girlfriend separated from him, which investigators believe may have contributed to his terrible motive for murder.
