Luxury bust, drug transport surge in Delhi: NDPS offensive double, consumption bill cases increase by 80%

Delhi witnessed a triple drug-related crime in the first three months of 2025 compared to 2024, while crimes in crimes under the Consumption Tax Act increased by more than 80% according to data shared by police on Sunday. According to the data, between January 1 and March 31, 2025, Delhi registered a total of 2,496 cases under the GST Act, while a total of 1,382 cases were registered in 2024 during the same period.

Data Similarly, drug and psychotropic substances bill violations climbed from 257 to 544, with an average of about 6 drug-related cases per day.

The Weapons Act cases have also increased, from 957 last year to 1,049 this year, while the Gambling Act cases have risen from 677 in 2024 to 1,018.
A senior police officer said the spike was attributed to the increase in law enforcement and crackdowns in Delhi.

Crimes registered under different bills, including the Weapons Act and Gambling, also exploded significantly, with 6,836 cases registered in the first three months of 2025, up sharply from 4,143 cases in 2024 and 4,080 cases in 2023.

“The rise in the GST and NDPS cases reflects proactive policing efforts and targeted operations against theft and drug peddling networks. The police also used surveillance tools and informant networks to track groups across the city.” In contrast, the overall cases of the Indian Penal Code and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita crimes fell slightly. Delhi recorded 63,898 such cases in the first quarter of 2025. There are about 710 cases per day, compared with 64,256 last year and 64,256 in 2023. Thefts also dropped from 2,017 to 1,725, and thefts from 3,644 to 3,578. Data shows that motor vehicle theft has remained largely unchanged, with 9,070 cases in 2025 and 9,080 in 2024.

However, the growth in “other theft” cases has increased to 27,066 in 2025, up from 24,226 last year to nearly 300 cases per day.
