Openai acquires AI coding tool Windsurf for $3 billion in negotiations: Report

Bloomberg reported that Openai is negotiating to acquire AI coding tools for $3 billion and quoted someone familiar with the matter.
Windsurf (formerly known as Codeium) will be Openai’s largest acquisition to date. This move could help ChatGpt Maker compete more directly in the field of AI coding assistants. However, the deal is not yet completed and may still change or collapse.
The acquisition will position OpenAI to better compete with companies that provide AI coding services, including Humans, Microsoft’s Github and Anysphere. Founded in 2021, Windsurf will join the list of startups acquired by OpenAI, which currently includes Vector Database Company Rockset and Multi-Multi.
According to the report, Windsurf is in conversation with investors including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst to raise $3 billion in valuation.
The report added that the company raised $150 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, with a valuation of $1.25 billion.
According to PitchBook, Windsurf has raised more than $200 million in venture capital.
In March, Openai received a $40 billion round of funding led by SoftBank, valuing AI companies at $300 billion.
