With tensions rising along the India-Pakistan border, the Maharashtra State Cyber Department on Saturday (May 10, 2025) directing citizens to “stay alert” when interacting with digital content or accessing documents from unverified sources, as cyber attacks surged after India launched the “sindoor’ operation.

Maharashtra cyber police warn people about files of malware infections targeting individual user devices. “These files are sent as government-related documents, so the possibility of interacting with that file is high and once opened, it can lead to data theft, system surveillance or broader network compromise,” said the additional police chief.

In view of the circumstances, authorities advise people to be cautious about clicking on unsolicited links or open attachments from unverified sources. Users must avoid downloading documents marked as government files or opening them without confirming the authenticity of the source.
Other instructions are using updated antivirus software, regular system scanning, secure login practices, and two-factor authentication.
Operation Sindoor is a strategic countermeasure launched in response to the recent terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 26 people were killed. Maharashtra State Cyber Department has been focusing on online platforms to detect and take illegal digital activities. While doing so, the department encountered “hostile” cyber entities that were retaliating against Sindoor Operations and were launching cyber warfare.
“Cyberattacks, including distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks and digital defamation activity, are aggravated from the other end, attacking infrastructure systems and government websites. These attacks are designed to undermine basic public services and undermine the credibility of government platforms,” as the Maharashtra Cybercrime official said.
DDOS attacks target servers or applications with malicious traffic, so legitimate traffic cannot access the website.
