Kerala’s excise tax has issued subpoenas to Malayalam actors, Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi, asking them to appear in court on Monday. The move comes after being arrested on April 1 at a resort near Alappuzha on April 1. The action led to the capture of a hybrid ganja worth about Rs 2 crore in the open market.

Officials say the arrest was the climax of a three-month surveillance operation. During the interrogation, Sultana allegedly named several clients of the Malayalam film industry, including actors Chacko and Bhasi. After trouble, Brazil filed an expected bail request, which he withdrew within hours of the Kerala High Court. GST officials earlier said they would call the cast when needed.

After detailed inquiries about Sultana and colleagues, notices are now issued to both actors. Brazil met a woman named Christina in a high court bail plea, whom he met in Kozhikode a few months ago. He claimed that during their conversation he received a message asking if he wanted “ganja” and he replied “wait”. He also said he believed the arrested hawker was Taslim. The excise tax officials, with the help of digital forensic experts, have been known to have retrieved key chat information between Brazil and Sultanna.

Originally from Kannur, Sultana is believed to be operated from Chennai and frequently travels to Kochi and Alappuzha, the main locations in what she calls the distribution network. In addition to suspected involvement in narcotics, she also served in small movie roles and assisted with script translation, thus bringing her into the film industry. This is not the first time she used the legal brush – her record in the gender racket table.

The subpoena was arrested a few days later, after recently admitting to drug use, Shine Tom Chacko, who later released on bail. Chacko has faced scrutiny before – in 2015, he was arrested for alleged possession of cocaine, but was declared for nearly a decade due to lack of evidence. Last year, Brazil was also questioned for the NDP case involving alleged gangster Om Prakash.
