Air India’s first retrofit VT-EXN with a modern third-level configuration; details are here

According to the official version, Air India welcomes its first refurbished narrow-body aircraft, VT-EXN (A320NEO), which includes new seats, carpet, curtains, cabin atmosphere and a third-level cabin configuration.

Last year, VT-EXN was sent to the renovation as part of the Tata Group’s $400 million renovation plan to upgrade Air India’s entire old-style narrow mechanism and wide aircraft.

Where will VT-EXN operate?

VT-EXN and the remaining 26 A320NEOs will operate on domestic and short international routes, with 14 new A320NEOS being added recently.

The report said the aircraft will provide modern facilities in a third-class cabin configuration.

Additionally, as part of the ongoing renovation plan for all 27 A320NEOs, which is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2025, Air India will install more than 3,500 brand new economy seats, more than 600 premium economy seats, and 200 business class seats.

It further said his transformation schedule will see more traditional aircraft, including 40 wide-body B787 and B777 aircraft, with the first B787 flight next month.

DCGA tightening seat inspection

According to PTI, the aviation supervisory authority DGCA has recommended that airlines regularly check seats to ensure their repairability during flights. In response, Air India has launched a check plan to check if the seat cushion sags every seven days, as the government confirmed on Monday.

The move comes after Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan last month criticized India’s “broken and sunk” seats. The airline apologized for the incident and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu directed Air India to take “necessary actions” to resolve the issue.
