McClelland High School science teacher slapped several child sexual abuse charges as principal fell into silence of “painful” news

A Victorian science teacher was charged with child sex crimes and was suspended after at least one student was charged last year.

Orhan Sahin was charged by police this week by the principal of McClelland High School in Frankston, a letter this week told parents and caregivers.

Sahin held a recreational relief position in the school in 2022, and then served as a science teacher in grades 7-10 from 2023 to May 2024.

Principal Laura Dowdell Spence said she wanted to inform the school community of “about the news as soon as possible”.

“Any information related to child sexual crimes can be frustrating and can trigger a range of emotions,” she said in the letter.

“If your child is affected by this news, our welfare team will be available. There is also a series of community support.

Ms Spencers said: “I commend people for the courage it takes to speak out and report criminals or other actions they have experienced or realized.”

Victoria police confirmed a 31-year-old man was charged after investigating the report of sexual assault.

The allegations reportedly occurred between 2022 and 2024 at a school in Frankston.

The 31-year-old man is charged with two counts of sexual assault between the ages of 16 and 17, with care, supervision or authority, and two counts of encouraging children aged 16 and 17, with care, supervision or authorization to engage in or participate in sexual activities.

Also, one person designates sexual assault and stalks another.

Ms Dowdell Spence said the families of former McClelland students taught by Sahin will also be notified.

“In view of respect for the privacy and well-being of anyone directly affected by these allegations and ensuring that we do not interfere with the court’s proceedings, I ask for your sensitivity when discussing or sharing information about the matter,” she said.

Sahin, from Frankston, was suspended by Victoria Teaching Academy in June 2024.

The Victorian Department of Education said the allegations were “painful” to the school community and said it had ensured “full support”.

Sahin was charged on June 12 before the Melbourne Caprates’Ct.
