Against the backdrop of tension with Turkiye, the Protocol Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) (May 15, 2025) postponed the qualification ceremony of the new Turkish ambassador in India. “The qualification ceremony to be held in Rashtrapati Bhavan today has been delayed due to arrangement issues,” the MEA said in a brief announcement.

A diplomatic source said the event’s postponement was surprising, and he was informed minutes before the event began. In addition to Turkey’s ambassador Ali Murat Ersoy, Bangladesh’s new high commissioner Riaz Hamidullah and Thailand’s envoys, Costa Rica, St Kitts and Nevis, will also issue certificates to the President’s Droupadi Murmu at a postponed ceremony.

Mr Ersoy took over in March after Türkiye’s previous Envoy Firat Sunel was transferred back to Türkiye. Mr. Erersoy earlier submitted a copy of his certificate to Anshuman Gaur, President of the Council, on April 4. The award ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan is part of formal diplomacy, where the mandate leader of India will attend when representing the head of the government of the Indian state.

One of the related diplomatic missions said the activity was fixed at least 10 days in advance, and said that such pre-fixed certificate activity was rarely postponed. However, official sources refused to postpone the delay to India and Turkey, which was affected after Ankara provided military support to Pakistan, even as India launched nine terrorist hubs across Pakistan in India.
