Measures to prevent reckless driving: Minister

Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar said on Tuesday that steps will be taken to increase the time gap between private buses operating in the state to between five and 10 minutes, from the current gap of about three minutes to prevent unhealthy competition and reckless driving.

The decision in this regard will be based on accidents and other data collected by the Kerala Road Safety Authority and the Ministry of Transport. Re-ordering of time gaps is crucial to improve the quality of public transportation and prevent accidents caused by improper competition among private buses.

In most countries, such a reasonable time gap is the norm. Activities such as installing CCTV in private buses help reduce accidents and increase fare collection, as indivisible bus personnel no longer blinds owners in their daily footsteps. The minister said many owners earn up to Rs 3,000 a day.

Earlier, he visited the bottleneck Vyttila junction and said the anvil was taking steps to simplify traffic.
