Vizhinjam Seaport commission: Establishment of the committee

On May 2, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formed an organizing committee before the formal commission of the scheduled Vizhinjam International Seaport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open a harbour on May 2.
According to Port Minister VN Vasavan, a meeting was convened to review the preparations for the inauguration and to make the event a grand moment in national history. The main part of the first phase of the construction of the Vizhinjam port has been completed and handed over in December itself. During the three-month trial, the port witnessed berths of ships with more berths than expected.
Overall, so far, about 265 ships have called at the port, which is also able to handle about 550,000 containers. The road connection between the railway and the port is two major projects that the state has been working on. In the 10.7 km railway, a 9.2 km tunnel has been proposed as part of the railway connection project. The minister said the detailed project report prepared by Kangkan Railway has been approved by the Ministry of Railways and work will begin soon.
