Openai’s Chatgpt became the world’s most downloaded app in March, capturing regular top contenders Instagram and Tiktok.
Chatgpt downloaded 46 million times in March, 13 million for iOS and 33 million for Android, according to a report from Appfigures. This puts it slightly above Instagram, which also dropped to second place (5 million on iOS, 41 million on Android), followed by Tiktok and third place with 45 million downloads (8 million on iOS, 37 million on Android).
According to AppFigures, Chatgpt’s downloads grew 28% from February to March, and 148% increased when comparing Q1 2025 to Q1 2024.

Recent upgrades have driven this growth, including GPT-4O image generation and the release of Ghibli-style AI Art.
Instagram had previously finished second on the Apple App Store and Google Play in January and February this year, while Tiktok still ranked first, driven by concerns about a potential U.S. ban.
In the global app store, Yuan owned Instagram always ranked No. 1 non-game apps in mid-2024.
The top ten apps in total were 339 million downloads in March, up from 299 million in February.
