Meet new National Democratic Interim Leader Don Davies Replaces Jagmeet Singh

After a major setback in the 2025 Canadian federal election, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has appointed Don Davies from Vancouver Kingsway since 2008 as its interim leader. He is a long-serving MP and has been an outstanding figure in the party and the country's political arena. During his time as a health critic for the party, he also led the advancement of vital health legislation such as dental care and pharmacies.

As a New Democratic MP, he introduced important private member legislation such as general pharmacies, bills for school nutrition programs, and free tuition for students with multiple needs.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta before he received the Bar Association in Alberta. His political career began as a researcher at the Alberta Legislative Council and later served as a policy and communication assistant to Alberta's official opposition leader Ray Martin.

Nearly a week after the resignation of Jagmeet Singh, a former New Democratic leader, resigned, his appointment as interim leader, was lowered to just seven seats in the House of Commons, marking the worst election result in the party's history and ultimately losing its formal party status. In the April 28 election, his resignation was still after his own victory at Bernabé Central. In a statement, the party said the New Democratic Federal Parliament had made a decision. “While the recent election results were not what we hoped, we have never had a strong commitment to building a better Canada.”

“With a new sense of purpose, we will ask the government to be responsible for the issues we hear across the country and continue to fight.”

The NDP also issued a statement in recognition of Singh's contribution, noting that he had “courage, sympathy, and a clear commitment to improving the lives of workers.”

Davies is actively involved in a variety of community organizations, including the Tools of Peace, Vancouver Cooperative Radio and La Quena Cooperative. He also has a passion for hockey and plays the violin. Residents of the Kensington community in Davies married speech pathologist Sheryl Palm, who has three children and a granddaughter.

Don's leadership will now direct the NDP at a critical time as the party regains base in the House of Commons.
