Who is Dr. Prathap C. Reddy
Dr. Reddy was born in 1933 in Agungda Village, Andhra Pradesh. From a very young age, he felt the suffering of people and wanted to reduce them, thus becoming a cardiologist and an entrepreneur. He first received his bachelor’s degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai and then received his MBBS. He then went to the UK and the US to study cardiology. He received scholarships from Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and Royal College. Over the past few years, he has led many research programs at Missouri State Chest Hospital in the United States and worked simultaneously. He then returned to India in 1971.
After returning, he opened the Apollo chain, India’s largest private hospital, in Chennai in 1983.
Which event changed Dr. Reddy’s life?
Although he has won excellent opportunities for a good career in the United States, the death of his child has led him to consider having a world-class medical facility in India. He then pioneered health care in India and changed the country’s health system. He had to sacrifice a lot to build a hospital. Dr. Reddy had to mortgage his family for Rs 300 crore due to lack of bank and government support. In this way, he built the first Apollo hospital in Chennai, with only 150 beds.
He hired highly qualified Indian doctors from the United States. Only one branch of Apollo saw huge profits. He then expanded to Ahmedabad, Biraspur, Mysore and Kolkata. Without greed, he treated some patients only for Rs 1. It also gets the pharmacy chain Apollo Pharmacy. It launched Apollo’s Homecare in 2015 and launched the Apollo 24/7 digital health platform in 2020. As of April 26, 2024, its valuation rose to Rs 10,000.
