“Hindus are forced to flee West Bengal…”: Trade Union Minister Giriraj Singh

Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying Hindus had been “forced” to flee the state.

“The safety of the Hindus is the responsibility of Mamata Banerjee and Muslims,” Singh’s reporter in Begusarai said. “Murshidabad violence shows that Hindus are forced to flee West Bengal … Unfortunately, this happened before the state government.”

This is when protests against the WAQF Act turned violent in Murshidabad and damaged public property. The WAQF (Amendment) bill was listed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from April 2 to 3, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Praveen Khandelwal excavated in the West Bengal government to understand the violence of Murshidabad against the WAQF (Amendment) bill and said it was about the state’s freedom of speech in the state and the government’s no action.

Speaking to ANI, Khandelwal said: “The West Bengal government cannot or is unwilling to stop this anarchy…it involves the state’s suppressed freedom of speech in the state, and the government there is not doing anything about it. The state government should act quickly to violate those who spread violence…”

He also questioned the work of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and asked if the state government was encouraging violence. “This raises questions about the work of the Chief Minister… Does the state government encourage such activities by watching silently?” BJP MPs questioned. The WAQF (Amendment) bill passed in both houses and later obtained the president’s consent and has since become law. On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu agreed to the WAQF (Amendment) bill, 2025.

The WAQF (Amendment) Act, in 2025, attempts to focus on improving the management of WAQF properties, empower relevant stakeholders, increase the efficiency of investigation, registration and case handling processes, and develop WAQF properties.
