The visionary Rajinder Gupta behind Trident Group has an inspiring success story. Born in a family of cotton dealers in Punjab, Gupta faces financial difficulties early in life. At the age of 14, he had to leave school after completing grade 9 due to financial restrictions. To support himself, he worked in small jobs such as making candles and cement pipes, earning Rs 30 a day.
Determined to surpass his environment, Gupta took bold action in the 1980s. In 1985, he set up Abhishek Industries, a fertilizer factory, with an initial investment of Rs 650 crore. By 1991, he co-founded Katai Mill and eventually made a profit. Building on this success, Gupta expanded to the textile, paper and chemical industries under the name of Trident Group. He has built multiple units in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, turning the Trident into a global powerhouse for major customers such as Walmart, Gippeni, Luxury and Flax.
Gupta resigned from Trident’s board of directors in 2022 for personal reasons, but remains the chairman of Trident Limited, the group’s flagship company. His contribution to industry led him to win him Padma Shri in 2007. With a net worth of over Rs 13,800 crore, Gupta is considered the wealthiest person in Punjab and is often referred to as “Dhirubhai Ambani of Punjab”.
