Chittam Sudhir, an agricultural entrepreneur from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, has become a symbol of innovation and success in the food industry. By introducing nutritious Xiaomi idlis to urban consumers, he created a thriving business that not only promotes a healthy diet but also supports local tribal farmers. Sudhir holds a master's degree in agricultural economics. His vision of making nutritious millet a part of the urban diet inspired his journey to start his business in 2018, with an initial investment of just Rs 50,000.
Sudhir's stall, Vasana Poli, is located in the MVP colony of Visakhapatnam and is now a local landmark. The stall is known for its affordable and healthy Xiaomi idlis, attracting customers as early as 6:30 a.m. These idlis are unique because they are steamed in Vistaraku leaves with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Idiolis is made from a mixture of eight millets and served with a chutney made from vegetables like sour, ginger and carrots. Sudhir's innovative approach makes these IDLI a popular choice for health-conscious consumers.
Sudhir offers approximately 700 kilograms of millet monthly from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam areas. He paid them more than the market interest rate, providing them with much-needed financial support. His efforts empower local farmers and facilitate the use of indigenous products.
The original business has grown into a profitable business. Sudhir now earns about Rs 7.5 lakh per month from his Millet IDLI sales.
At the beginning of the journey, Sudhir faces major challenges, including the skepticism of his family. However, his determination and hard work paid off and his stalls have become widely popular. His efforts were even recognized by former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, who praised Sudhir for promoting healthy eating habits.
