Prabhakar Raghavan is a famous name in the technological world. He is Google’s chief technician and he reportedly works closely with CEO Sundar Pichai. He is an IIT Madras alumnus who completed BTECH in electrical engineering in 1981.
He has conducted more than 20 years of research covering algorithms, web searches and databases. He is one of the rare figures who excel in academic research, technical leadership, and company management and governance. Prior to joining tech giant Google in 2012, Prabhakar founded and led the Yahoo! Lab. He also served as Chief Technology Officer at Verity and worked at IBM Research for 14 years.
After completing his graduation from IIT Madras, Raghavan moved to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering science from the University of California. He went on to receive his education at UC Berkeley and earned his Ph.D. In the field of computer science in 1986. Since then, Prabhakar has held various research positions at IBM. Later, he was originally a researcher at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center.

He is the co-author of algorithms and search text: Introduction to random algorithms and information retrieval. In 2018, Prabhakar was responsible for Google’s advertising and commerce and expanded its scope to include search, geography and assistants in 2020. In 2024, he transitioned to the role of Google’s chief technician.
