Meghalaya Group Opposes Ecotourism Project in Wildlife Reserve

Guwahati
A youth group opposes the ecotourism development project at the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Reserve in Meghalaya, citing potential threats to its delicate ecosystem.
On May 6, in a letter submitted to the state’s additional forest director (wildlife) and director of the wildlife reserve, the Hyniewtrep Youth Commission (HYC) called for the replacement of the planned ecotourism project in the Ri-Bhoii district in Meghalaya Province.
HYC is the second organization to oppose a project worth Rs 23.7 billion. The Green-Tech Foundation (GTF), a Shillon-based environmental group, has applied to the state’s Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh for the proposed infrastructure project.
The project was awarded to Meghalaya’s Ecological Development Association a few weeks ago, requiring the construction of tourist residences, glass sky walks, water sports arenas and other visitor-friendly amenities.
“The sanctuary is a key habitat for all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants. Any tourism activity will destroy the fragile ecology of the reserve,” said HYC President Roykupar Synrem.
He also said tourism-related projects should not be allowed in and around the reserve.
GTF chairman HBN Nonglang told reporters in April that the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary is too small for infrastructure projects and has good human interaction.
“The government should point funds to the communities around the shelter to ensure improved livelihoods and employment opportunities, not infrastructure projects,” he said.
Founded in 1981, the shelter is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the endangered red-necked horns.
In 2021, the management effectiveness assessment report for national parks and wildlife reserves said that Nongkhyllem is the most protected area in the Northeast.
Villagers and NGOs have also been protesting against infrastructure projects in and around and around the Northeast. These include an oil exploration project near the Little Rogue Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Assam, and a logistics park adjacent to the Dorabel Wetland near Guwahati.
