MGP convenes meeting to develop strategies to prevent tree sales on Sunday

Due to the recent cuts of 40 huge trees in the city, and anger at its public outrage, the city-based non-governmental organization Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), convened a meeting to develop strategies for protecting trees.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 4pm on Sunday and will be held at the MGP office on 6/1 on Yadavgiri Vivekananda Road.

Botanist S. Natesh, the author of the book Iconic tree of Indiapublished in 2024, will attend meetings and make suggestions on how citizens can blend together on a common platform to prevent tree sales.

Environmentalists call it “murder” After the “murder” of Hyder Ali Road, more than 40 years.

The incident sparked anger and led to widespread protests in the city, while activists also took a series of actions, including candlelight vigils, replanting drives, online petitions, and formal complaints to Chief Minister Lokayukta, National Green Griminal and National Green Grimunal and Deputy Commissioner.

The People’s Alliance of Methuru Chapter (PUCL) has also written to Eshwar Khandre, Minister of Forests, Ecology and Environment, to amend the Karnataka Protection Tree Protection Act of 1976 to strengthen tree protection. A crowdfunded drill also saw transplants of a huge tree that collapsed near the embankment of Lake Kukahari, highlighting the growing public concerns about environmentally-related issues.

Although the minister ordered an investigation into the incident from his perspective and sought a report from the Deputy Commissioner, there are concerns that nearly 300 trees were marked as cutting paved the way for linear projects such as drawing high-tension cables or expanding existing roads.

MGP said before this event that the best-selling tree should be the last resort only after exploring all alternatives to preservation. The group hopes Sunday’s meeting will become a platform to build a collective voice of unnecessary deforestation in Mysuru.

Dr Natesh is a retired senior consultant in the Department of Biotechnology, the government of India, and will chair the meeting. What you can notice is the plants. Aponogeton Nateshiinamed after him.
