A city with single ink

Hyderabad: The Nehru Art Gallery launched a unique solo exhibition on Friday, when Deccan Chronicle Cartoon editor Shaik Subhani’s three-day exhibition “Hyderabad Ku Line Maarroun…” unfolded the 70-line drawings that mapped the city. The exhibition will remain open until April 20.
“We are looking at Hyderabad’s legacy in the way of a cartoonist: keen, affectionate, unfiltered.” Dr. Mamidi Harikrishna and JNAFAU Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor T. Gangadhar, Professor T. Gancadhar and JNAFAU held the exhibition together. He added: “There is a deep aesthetic in these works of art, especially those that capture the architecture of Kakatiya era. Buildings such as Ravappa and Kuthu stand out. The Thousand Pillar Temple was built in the 11th century and Ravappa appeared in the 12th century.”
“Every day I see Deccan Chronicle because I’m a fan of Subhani. Now, I feel like I’ve seen movie stars in real life. When I see his sketches, I recall the grandeur of the dynasty,” Raunaq Yar Khan said.
MV Ramana Reddy said: “The monument can fall at any time, but this wonderful spell of the sketchbook, the glory of Telangana will last for a long time.”
Gallery and art lovers are full of abilities.
For Professor T. Gangadhar of JNAFAU, “Line Sketch bought beauty for these monuments. This is a new trend. It is a new trend. Only because of Subhani, it is possible. He brought out the 3D dimension of the monument, which is unique. This is only for artists like Subhani.”
“We asked Subhani to extend the exhibition for architecture students who are not here due to holidays. These drawings will help them in a lot,” said JNAFAU Academy of Fine Arts President ML Anand.
“Subhani’s comics bring cheers to my life. Seeing his other works of art is a revelation,” said former DGP Huda.
Businessman Abdul Rahman is fascinated by detailed line drawings of iconic monuments. He said he was going to buy some works for personal purposes. “These are more pleasant than the photos,” he said.

Ramana Giri, who has been an artist for 40 years, calls the work “real and modern”.
“I’ve never seen a landscape like this before. Most people are working hard, but it feels more realistic and modern. It’s not only about temples and sculptures; these works bring the scenes to life. Subhani’s emphasis and dedication is really impressive.”
Speaking at the event, Subhani recalled his first encounter with historical monuments when he won a prize in the Cartoon Contest as a student in 1980. “I was shocked by the beauty of Charminar and Macca Masjid. Since I didn’t have a camera, I hand-drawn sketches of these structures from different angles.”
Subhani said he moved to Hyderabad in 1985 and joined Deccan Chronicle, and he said he would give many rough sketches of the monuments.
“A few years later, I bought a small camera and started taking pictures. I quickly realized that the camera has its limitations. For artists, there is no such limitation. I can capture the entire scene with sketches.”
