Monsoons above normal rainfall in Andhra Pradesh: IMD

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh will experience higher than normal cumulative rainfall before the Indian Meteorological Ministry predicts the monsoon on Tuesday.

This is the second consecutive year that IMD forecasts are higher than normal rainfall in the first long-distance forecast for the southwest monsoon season. IMD predicts that India may see higher than normal rainfall during the four-month southwestern monsoon season (June to September 2025), with a long-term rainfall of 87 cm cumulative rainfall of 105%.

The Meteorological Bureau ruled out the possibility of El Ninono phenomenon throughout the season.

Andhra Pradesh received 21% excess rainfall during the southwest monsoon in 2024 (June 1-30). The state has accumulated rainfall of 629.2 mm and 521.6 mm. In 2023, AP recorded a total of 454.6 mm of rain during the monsoon, less than 13% above normal. In 2022, the state’s rainfall totaled 575.5 mm (10% higher than the normal 521.6 mm).

S Karuna Sagar, a scientist at IMD-Amaravati, said Andhra Pradesh is expected to expect rain during this year’s southwestern monsoon season. Andhra Pradesh on the North Coast will experience extra rainfall during the monsoon.

The exact date on which the southwest monsoon begins in the state is unclear. The arrival of SW monsoon in the state depends on the attacks and progress of Kerala. The southwest monsoon usually arrives at the Associated Press in the first week of June. Last year, it arrived on June 1, four days in advance.
