Most Hezbollah military sites in southern Lebanon ceded to the army: Source

Beirut: Sources close to the group said on Saturday that most military sites belonging to Hezbollah in Lebanon were placed under the control of Lebanese troops.

The ceasefire on November 27 ended more than a year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, including two months of a full-scale war, which stipulated that only UN peacekeepers and Lebanese troops could be deployed in the south.

The deal requires Iran-backed militants to remove the remaining military infrastructure in the south and move their fighters to fighters north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Israeli border.

“The sport has ceded 190 people to the army in the 265 Hezbollah military positions identified south of Litani,” the source said on anonymous.

Under the ceasefire, Israel will withdraw its troops from Lebanon by February 18 after a January deadline, but it will leave its troops in five places it considers strategic.

Israel continues to attack what it says is members of Hezbollah infrastructure or Lebanese organizations.

In his speech on Saturday, commemorating the anniversary of the civil war in Lebanon in 1975-1990, President Joseph Aoun appealed to Hezbollah to lay down his weapons.

“Because we all agree that any weapon outside of state power will endanger Lebanon’s interests … It’s time for all of us to say: ‘Lebanon can only be protected by the state, the army and the security forces,” he said.

A Lebanese official said Morgan Ortagus, deputy U.S. Middle East envoy, visited Beirut last weekend to discuss senior Lebanese figures.

“We continue to urge the government to fully implement the cessation of hostilities, including disarming Hezbollah and all militias,” Ortagus said in an interview with Lebanese television channel LBCI.

She said it should happen “as soon as possible”.

The United States chairs a committee, which also includes France, oversees the ceasefire.

Hezbollah began firing north Israel in support of Palestinians following the attacks on Israel by Hamas militants from Gaza in October 2023.

Last September, months of cross-border exchanges with Israeli forces severely weakened Hezbollah.

According to Lebanese authorities, more than 4,000 people were killed in the hostilities.
