Mother’s Day in America: Untold Stories of How This Special Day Begins and What It Means

Mother’s Day celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year is a heartfelt occasion dedicated to respecting mothers and their profound impact on our lives. Although its modern adherence is relatively new, the tradition of celebrating maternality can be traced back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Greece and Rome, festivals were held to commemorate the mother goddesses such as Rhea and Sebel. Early Christianity introduced “Mother Sunday”, a day of faithful return to its “Mother Church”, which gradually evolved into a secular mother celebration, especially in countries like Britain.
In the United States, in the 19th century, efforts were made to unify the country through education and support mothers. Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia has established a Mother’s Day work club to teach local women appropriate parenting and provide support and guidance. These clubs played a role in unifying a country that was still divided in the civil war. In 1868, Jarvis organized the “Mother’s Friendship Day” to bring his mother together with former Alliance and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.
Around the same time, the famous activist and writer Julia Ward Howe advocated “Mother’s Day Peace” in 1870, urging women to unite in war and promote peace. Although her efforts did not lead to a formal holiday, they laid the foundation for future plans.

Mother’s Day in modern background

Modern Mother’s Day is credited to Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Inspired by her mother’s work and sacrifice, Anna organized her first official Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908. She ran relentlessly, making Mother’s Day recognized as a formal holiday, wrote numerous letters and gained support nationwide. Her efforts reached the end in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a declaration designated the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day, a national holiday to commemorate the mother. She envisions the day as a personal celebration of her mother through handwritten letters and heartfelt expressions, rather than buying cards, flowers and chocolates. Jarvis actively opposed commercialization, organized boycotts, and even faced arrests for protests. She spent her later years fighting to preserve Mother’s Day’s original intention, and eventually died in 1948, blind and financially impoverished. Please read also: Elon Musk
