Mumbai police send second notice to Kunal Kamra in defamation case

The case was registered with the Khar Police Station based on a complaint by Shiv Sena Mla Murji Patel. While the specific date of Kamra’s appearance has not been disclosed, officials confirmed he has requested a week to respond to the preliminary notice issued on Tuesday.
The complaint stems from a recent satirical comedy performance in Mumbai, where Kamra allegedly mocked Eknath Shinde’s political actions without directly naming him. Kamra’s remarks reportedly targeted the role of Sinder in the 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, which led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Ahadi government.
A senior police official said further legal action could be taken if Kamra fails to respond to the second notice. “We are following appropriate procedures and the investigation will be conducted based on his statements and available evidence,” the official said.
This is not the first time Kamra has faced legal troubles for his political satire. He is known for his outspoken views, and he has previously brought criticism and legal scrutiny for jokes targeting politicians.
The incident sparked debate on social media, with supporters defending Kamra’s right to freedom of speech, while others argued his comments were disrespectful to the elected leader.
Police officials said further steps will depend on Kamra’s cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leaders believe that such comments would undermine the image of public representatives and deserve legal scrutiny.
