The judicial court of the Kolkata High Court issued a petition on Thursday (May 15, 2025) accusing police hounds of hunting a man and his son’s family who were killed in public violence that rocked the Mehdabad area in April.

The bench chaired by Judge Soumen Sen was released from the designated bench, which contained a hearing problem related to police inaction and excessive action.

A high court judge issued a petition ahead of time because a court had heard about the issues related to the Mehdabad incident and the current petitioner was allegedly a victim of violence in the area.

The matter will be returned to the Chief Justice of the High Court to be appointed as a new hearing table.

The widows of victims Haragobinda Das and Chandan were aggrieved for alleged actions.

Haragobinda Das and his son Chandan were rioted in Samserganj in Murshidabad district on April 12, during a protest in the WAQF (Amendment) Act on April 12.

Their family came to the Salt Lake and remained in a house there with the aim of filing a petition to the High Court, said on a single bench by Judge Tirthankar Ghosh.

Their lawyer said in court that the door of the house was broken and the abuse was thrown at the father and son of the deceased by personnel from the Bidhannagar police station.
