Police have registered a 30-year-old IPS official for allegedly raping a female doctor in Nagpur, Maharashtra after pledging to marry her, officials said on Sunday.

They said the 28-year-old woman approached the Imawada Police Station in Nagpur on Friday (April 11).

An official said she and the man were contacted in November 2022 via social media platform Instagram, according to the complainant.

Police said the defendant was preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam at the time and the woman was performing MBBS courses.

Their online conversation quickly turned into a phone call. Police said the defendant promised to marry the woman and develop a physical relationship with her after they became friends.

The official said the defendant began to avoid the woman and refused to marry her after being elected as the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Police said the man’s family also did not respond to the woman because she was upset and brought a complaint to Imawada police.

They said that according to her complaint, IPS officials were registered and further investigated against them on Saturday.
