Nabard and Mabif provide GI applications for Sevur peanuts, Kalakadu Banana, Kalidaikurichi Appalam and Adhanakotai cashews

The National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) and the MADURAI AGRI Business Incubation Forum (MABIF) have facilitated the application of geographic indication (GI) tags for Sevur Fendnut, Kalakadu Banana, Kalidaikurichi Appalam and Adhanakotai Cashew. IPR lawyer P. Sanjai Gandhi submitted an application on behalf of the association and facilitators seeking GI tags.
Sevur Nilakkadalai Urpathiyalargal Sangam is an applicant for Sevur Peanuts, which is grown in and around Sevur Village, Kangeyam Taluk, Tiruppur. These peanuts are also grown in villages including Padiyur, Nathakkadaiyur, Pappankulam, Nattaramangalam, Uthiyur and Vellakovil. These locations fall in semiarid areas, with red soil and sandy soil making them ideal for peanut cultivation.
Sevur peanuts are grown on approximately 4,600 acres of land, extending up to 10,000 acres during peak periods. Crops are grown once a year. It was sown in September and harvested in November. In well-irrigated areas, it is twice a year. The average yield of this particular peanut is 1,000 to 1,200 kg per hectare, and in some cases, the yield can reach 1,500 to 1,800 kg per hectare.
The main applicant for Kalakadu Banana is Kalakadu Banana Urpathiyalargal Sangam. The banana is grown in the Kalakad area of ​​Tirunelveli. The area’s proximity to the coast and its tropical climate creates the perfect environment for banana cultivation. The applicant in the document mentioned that the combination of wet conditions and fertile alluvial soil allows the banana plant to flourish and produce fruits with different characteristics, which are of high value in both local and international markets. Karacadu Bananas are usually 15-18 cm long, with a diameter of 3-4.5 cm and a weight of 100-150 grams.
Kallidaikurichi Appalam is a traditional handmade pappalam made from finely ground black ke (Urad Dal), mixed with salt and Asafoetida and prepared using water from the famous Tamirabarani River. Application for this product was filed by Kallidaikurichi Appalam Urpathiyalargal Sangam. The black gram used is grown and processed locally by skilled artisans, many of whom belong to families who have participated in the business for generations. The product supports numerous home industries and provides livelihood opportunities for local communities in the region.
Adhanakotai cashew Vaazhai Urpathiyalargal has requested that Adhanakotai cashew be provided with GI tags. Adhanakotai village located in Pudukkottai is known for its favorable climatic conditions, red loam and moderate rainfall, which contributes to the growth of high-quality cashew trees. These cashews are traditionally hand-baked, giving them a unique smoky flavor and rich flavor.
