The 1971 Pakistan War marks the last air strike sirens

Hyderabad:When the last time the air rain warning sirens rang in Hyderabad, it was during the 1971 war with Pakistan. As Hyderabad is considered vulnerable to enemy attacks, Wednesday’s air raid exercise is expected to not only test the preparations for the response of government agencies, but also dispatch officials to develop plans to install air raid sirens throughout the city.
There are few such sirens except for some defense-related agencies. Some industries have siren, but the sirens will be issued in Hyderabad during the first air strike exercise on Wednesday. Although some religious institutions also have sirens, they have now decided not to use them.
There was no need for raid sirens with the prospect of war and the sudden demand for them after the 1971 war, nor was it discussed at a meeting of top government officials from various departments on Tuesday.
“We've started looking for sources where sirens can be purchased. In the past, they used to be rocked by hand, and now they're there, but now there are electronics. One issue that is also discussed is the numbers the city might need, and the exact places where they can be installed. We hope to put all of these issues in the right place in the next few days,” said a senior government official.
