Nepali immigrant children shine in SSLC: stories of perseverance, language and dreams

The children of a Nepalese immigrant couple in Kerala have achieved remarkable academic achievements, defiing language and economic challenges to ensure all A+ levels in the SSLC exam.

Naribankami and Eshwari Kami, children Debi Kami and Naveen Kami, moved from Rukum District in Nepal nearly two decades ago, both of whom performed well in the Grade X exam at Chatalon High School. Last year, Debi earned an A+ rating in all subjects, but her younger brother Naveen repeated the feat this year – proving their resilience and Kerala’s all-inclusive education system.

The Kami family arrived in Kerala when they were only one year old and did not understand Malayalam. The couple settled in Panayal and worked on daily wage jobs at the quarry to support their families. Despite economic struggles and language barriers, they remain focused on their children’s education, communicating in Nepal as their children gradually answer Malayalam at school.

Speech Hindus, Eshwari Kami said that the education in Kerala is excellent.

“When I told our family in Nepal that Navin received all A+, they were excited. We hope our children continue to educate here.”

The teachers at Chatanal School played a crucial role, and their attention gave personal attention when the children initially struggled with the Malayalam. Today, siblings speak fluent Malayalam and Nepal.

Naven’s achievements are particularly striking considering his daily work involves walking two kilometers, reaching the school and fetching water from nearby wells, due to the ongoing water shortage at home. Naveen is a recipient of the LSS and USS scholarship, is a member of the Student Police Craftsman and is eager to study computer science twice at Plus Plus Plus.

For the past 19 years, the Kami family has lived in a rental house in Panayal Village. They plan to take their children to the ancestral home in Rukum next year – the trip involves taking a full day bus from Gathmandu and then jeep to their remote village.

Despite being far from their roots and daily difficulties, Kami’s children turn adversity into achievements, symbolizing the transformative power of education and perseverance.
