In a shocking revelation, nine people found to share drug injections were HIV carriers in Valanchery, Malappuram district, Kerala. Health authorities confirmed that three of them were migrant workers from other states.
A study conducted by the health department was the discovery of new HIV-positive cases in Valanchery in January 2025 by the Kerala Aids Control Society, which found that eight other people who shared the syringe with agreed to HIV.
Regional Medical Officer (DMO) R. Renuka warned that HIV cases among drug users could surge, citing the group’s vulnerability to contraction and spreading HIV. Dr. Renuka’s concern is finding that all people diagnosed with HIV in Valanchery are drug users.
Targeted surveillance
After the HIV-positive case was found in Valanchery in January, the health department launched a targeted surveillance program focusing on drug users and sex workers in the region.
Confirming the fear of health authorities, nine people who shared the syringe used for drug use are now positive for HIV. Some of them are married, raising concerns that the virus may spread to their spouses.
