Volvo cuts up to 800 U.S. jobs

A spokesman said Friday that the Volvo Group plans to lay off up to 800 workers in three U.S. facilities over the next three months, a question of market uncertainty and concerns demanded in the face of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Volvo Group North America said it told employees in a statement that it plans to lay off 550-800 people on its Macungie, Pennsylvania website, as well as two Volvo Group facilities in Dublin, Virginia and Hagerstown, Maryland.

According to its website, the company is part of Swedish AB Volvo, which employs nearly 20,000 people in North America.

Trump has overturned the global trade system that has been established for more than 75 years and has planned tariffs on products from around the world. His sensitive trade policies undermined consumer and business confidence and led economists to raise forecasts for the U.S. recession.
Volvo Group’s layoffs are the latest response from the automotive and truck industry, which is being removed from the Republican president’s tariffs on certain parts, which promises to increase the cost of manufacturing vehicles.

“Heavy truck orders continue to be negatively affected by freight rates and demand, possible regulatory changes and market uncertainty affected by tariffs,” a spokesperson for Volvo Group said in an emailed statement.

“We regret that action must be taken, but we need to align production with reduced demand for vehicles.”
