Up to 72 petitions, including those of Aimim leader Asaduddin Owaisi, have raised a challenge to the effectiveness of the 2025 WAQF amendment.
The Supreme Court has asked the center if it is willing to allow Muslims to become part of the Hindu religious trust. The Supreme Court commented on the WAQF Amendment was raised during a hearing on a series of petitions. The bench consists of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan. The hearing is being held with senior advocate Kapil Sibal and appears for the petitioner side to submit comments.
The Centre recently notified the WAQF (Amendment) Act of 2025, which received the consent of President Droupadi Murmu on April 5 after a fierce debate between the two houses. The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting for it, while 95 opposed it. Lok Sabha cleared it, with 288 members supporting it and opposing 232 members.

As many as 72 petitions, including Aimim leader Asaduddin Owaisi, All India Muslim Individual Law Commission (AIMPLB), Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), MPs MPS Imran Pratapgarhi and Mohammad jaw, challenged. The Centre filed a warning in the Supreme Court on April 8 and requested a hearing before any order was passed in this matter. One party issued a warning in the High Court and the Supreme Court to ensure that no orders were heard.
