The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is perhaps the strictest red carpet in the world. Now, the festival has added a new rule: No nude.
While nudity has never been recognized at festivals before, Cannes updated its dress code on the eve of the 78th edition to read “Nude is prohibited on the red carpet and any other area of the festival.”
While the non-serial policy of no-shirt is standardized in places less charming than the Cannes Film Festival, the adjustments to the policy have attracted widespread attention due to the recent trend of pure and “nude dresses” such as the Grammys look of Bianca Censori. Cannes news officials said requesting clarity to the policy said the festival “has certain long-term effective rules defined in its charter.” “The purpose is not to regulate the clothing itself according to the institutional framework of events and French law, but to prohibit complete nudity on the red carpet,” it said. Still, celebrities like Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell and Kendall Jenner often flashed skin at the French Riviera Festival and have long been touted by celebrities. Black tie and evening gown are required for an evening premiere in Palais Grand Theatre Lumiere. Although not a Cannes security official in recent years, women are sometimes rejected for not wearing high heels.
The festival also bans selfies in 2018 – Cannes director Thierry Fremaux calls them “geeky” – but A-Listers sometimes take quick photos on the steps of the palace.
