Tata Group’s TCS is the third most valuable company in India with a market capitalization of Rs 1,292 crore. The IT major is believed to be the crowning achievement of the late chairman of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata, who died in October last year. But did you know that TCS was not created by Ratan Tata? Yes, you read it correctly. It was founded by Faqir Chand Kohli, who is known as the Father of India. He was a visionary leader born in 1924 in Peshawar, India (now Pakistan). He is commonly known as FC Kohli, the first CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). He also has links with other companies from the Tata Group, including Tata Power Company and Tata Elxsi.
Kohli received a degree in English, Applied Mathematics and Physics from the University of Punjab, Lahore. Later, he studied electrical engineering in Canada and pursued his master’s degree in systems engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1951, he returned to India and worked for Tata Electric Company. In 1968, he helped establish the TATA consulting service at the request of then-Partner Chairman JRD Tata.

He served as president and chairman of Nasscom, an IT service advocacy firm in India from 1995 to 1996. Kohli retired in 1999 but he has led the company internally, including N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons. In 2002, he won the third highest civilian honor in India for his contribution to the Indian software industry. Kohli married his Swarn, a consumer rights activist and lawyer. They have three children. He died on November 26, 2020 at the age of 96.
