Government officials said India hopes to quickly reach a deal with the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump decided to suspend huge reciprocal tariffs in dozens of countries.

India and the United States have agreed in February to end the first phase of the trade deal in the fall of 2025, aiming to reach $500 billion in two-way trade by 2030.

“The 90-day pause of reciprocity tariffs is a relief for Indian exporters, especially shrimp exporters,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“India was one of the first countries to start a deal with the United States and jointly agreed to a deadline to end the issue,” the official said.

The official added that global export and trade momentum will continue to depend on trade tensions between the United States and China.

The Department of Trade, which led the talks with the U.S., did not immediately respond to emails seeking comments.

On Wednesday (April 9, 2025), Mr. Trump temporarily lowered the responsibilities of trading partners, including India, after imposing high tariffs in just 24 hours, freeing up the engines of the most intense financial market volatility since the early 19ths.

But to put pressure on China, Mr. Trump said he would raise tariffs of 125% on imports from China. But the U.S. reciprocal tariff on India is 10%.
