Guwahati:
A Manipur Congress leader seeks the security of the state after rumors on social media platforms linked him to a “tape” case involving former chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh.
Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, an advocate of the Manipur High Court, petitioned Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Secretary PK Singh and Police Director General Rajiv Singh for protection because “any form of rumors and fake news can potentially lead to state mob violence in Turmoil”.
He asserted that he was not involved in the “audio tape” case heard by the Supreme Court. “I didn’t sign anything vakalatnama (Legal documents authorized by the attorney representing the client) represent the petitioner or defendant. “He said on Friday (April 18, 2025).
Mr Meitei, an executive panel member of the All-India Congress Law Committee, said some people with vested interests have been spreading rumors to undermine his image and the party’s image.
He asked the governor and others to “immediately curb the spread of rumors and false news, and mistakenly contacted my name in an unrelated case…” He said the rumor threatened his life and property.
The center informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that a forensic report on the authenticity of the tape was ready and will be submitted to the sealed cover.
A person allegedly heard in the videotape claiming responsibility for racial violence against the state.
