Despite all the success Hum Tum brings, you’ll be surprised to know that Saif Ali Khan is not the top choice for Karan Kapoor’s character in the movie. Director Kunal Kohli initially wanted to play Hrithik Roshan, who had previously worked at Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002).

The 2004 romantic comedy Hum Tum, directed by Kunal Kohli, was directed by Aditya Chopra and starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, playing the leading role, with a significant box office success. It not only established Saif Ali Khan as a romantic leader, but also consolidated Rani Mukerji as one of the most iconic leaders of her generation. Hum Tum has a budget of Rs 85 crore and earned Rs 42.6 crore at the box office, a key and commercial success. Director Kunal Kohli initially wanted to play Hrithik Roshan, who had previously worked at Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). Aamir Khan and Vivek Oberoi are also approached to starring after he rejected offers for a series of failed films, but they also refused.

Kunal Kohli ended up casting Saif Ali Khan. He explained the reasons behind the decision in an interview, saying: “I realized that the character needed a young man who could present a younger picture. Saif has this unique quality; he could play young men aged 21 and 29.”

Hum Tum has performed well in India and abroad, establishing careers of Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan. Hum Tum also relaxed inspiring support from Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Rati Agnihotri and Jimmy Sheirgill when he met Sally.
