Condemning Governor RN Ravi chanted “Jai Sri Ram” and asked people to follow suit at a university event in Madurai on Saturday, the state’s general school system, Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN), said Mr Ravi said Ravi had violated his oath and should be removed from the governor of Tamil Nadu.
In a press release, SPCSS-TN President P. Ratnasabapathy and Secretary-General PB Prince Gajendra Babu said that Mr. Ravi was invited to serve as the principal guest of the Governor. He was not invited to be a missionary of a particular religion, nor was he asked to preach religiously.
“Because of his ignorance and arrogance, he continued to spread false ideas, which in fact was to disrupt peace and incite one group of people to oppose another.
The release further states that the literature of each religion is taught and learned purely as an academic exercise and does not discriminate against any text or religion. Without any basic knowledge about how students learn religious texts in secular settings, Mr. Ravi is making misleading statements.
It added: “Education is a secular activity. In classrooms and official functions, students should not be given any religious guidance, and no one should be directed to chant the name of God of a particular religion…”
Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Teresa mother, Alagappa, Tamilnadu Teacher Education and Anna University Teachers Association (MUTA) also condemned the governor. Its secretary-general in Senthamarai Kannan said the governor’s remarks equal to the “saffron” of educational institutions. He further said that the governor should resign.
