Only 12% of judges disclosed their assets

New Delhi: Data available from the Supreme Court and 25 High Courts show that only 11.94% of the current judges in the country have been disclosed as of April 11, 2025. Despite a recent Supreme Court resolution, the transparency gap was proposed in the Supreme Court’s Supreme Court resolution, with all service judges and future appointments revealing Apex Court’s assets on Apex Court.

The controversy allegedly found in the fire at the Delhi residence of Justice Yashwant Varma has caused a boost to transparency. It is reported that 30 of the 33 Supreme Court judges have submitted details of their assets to the Chief Justice of India, but the information is still uploaded on the court website.

At the High Court level, only 95 of the 762 judges (about 12.46%) disclosed their assets online. It is worth noting that the main bodies including the Allahabad High Court (including 81 service judges) and the 18 high courts in Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujarat and Patna High Courts have not disclosed any details about their judge’s assets.

By contrast, Kerala High Court leads transparency, with 41 of its 44 judges (93%) declaring its assets after the Supreme Court’s ruling. In addition, 11 of Himaal’s 12 judges were among 30 of the 53 judges in the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana, and 7 of the 36 judges in Delhi shared their financial details. The Madras High Court and the Chhattisgarh High Court respectively disclosed information about five and one judge.
