Opposition slams Maharashtra government violates agreement during CJI visit

Mumbai: India’s Chief Justice BR Gavai visited his hometown of Maharashtra for the first time after becoming CJI, with the opposition party slamming the Mahayuti government for breaching the rules. Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) asked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to clarify the matter, which accused CJI of being insulted by the state government of its own state.
CJI expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement lapse during his visit to Maharashtra on Sunday, noting that major state officials, including the chief secretary, police chief or municipal police chief, did not receive him after arriving in Mumbai.
Justice Gawai is the second Dalit to reach the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The opposition MVA slammed the center for not providing him with appropriate agreements.
“This is a very unfortunate event, with the son of Maharashtra who arrived at the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country and was insulted by the government of his own country. Is the ruling elite and senior officials of the Maharashtra government angry at the judiciary? Ask Vijay Wadettiwar, the leader of the legislature of the Congress.
“After learning that certain senior officials who should be present in accordance with the agreement welcomed the CJI during their first visit after the resumption of the new office,” said Mahesh Tapase, chief spokesman for NCP (SP).
CJI Gavai attended a Fernit ceremony held in Mumbai on Sunday by Maharashtra Bar Association and Goa in Dadar. During the event, he emphasized the importance of mutual respect between the three pillars of democracy – the judiciary, the legislature and the executive.
“When a person in Maharashtra becomes the Chief Justice of India and visits Maharashtra for the first time, if the secretary, police chief or police chief of Mumbai is not suitable, it depends on whether they are correct, which is correct for them,” the Chief Justice said.
Mr. Gawai also pointed out that the agreement is not just a form, but a symbol of respect for the constitutional authorities. “Agreement is not new – it’s a matter of respect given to another constitution by a constitutional body.”
Mr. Gawai, who swore as CJI on 14 May, said that although he did not want to involve such a small matter, he felt it necessary to mention the same thing so that people could know it. “If I have other people here, then the provisions of Article 142 will be considered,” he said.
Article 142 of the Constitution of India grants the Supreme Court any order required to issue complete justice before the case. It also authorizes the court to issue directives to ensure individual attendance.
