Man joins Zomato as a delivery partner for 2 days and discovers harsh reality

When problems arise in life, most people are looking for comfort, perhaps a short vacation, vacation or distraction. But one Reddit user decided to do something very different after facing failure – he became a Zomato delivery rider for a weekend. One of the original plans turned into a powerful and emotional experience that changed how he viewed his life and the hard-working gig workers.

In an article about SubReddit R/Personal FinanceIndia, users share that he is an American-educated entrepreneur with a wealthy Indian family. After returning to India to start his business, he faced major setbacks when his project he worked for months was unsuccessful. He felt frustrated and lost, and he spoke to his father, who gently reminded him that he lived a privileged life and was free from most economic struggles. “Maybe it’s time to see life on the other hand,” his father said.

Taking this seriously, he signed up for the Zomato delivery agent’s weekend shift. What followed was an eye-opener.

From the hot sun to handling traffic and climbing stairs to delivering food, he found himself completely exhausted. He had not been driving a scooter for 15 years, and at the end of each shift he collapsed on the bed and could hardly move. However, the hardest part is not physical. This is how people treat him.

He wrote that customers and hotel staff often overlooked or fired him. Many people don’t even say a simple “thank you”. He realized the identity of the invisible and underrated delivery worker. Even after a whole day of hard work, he could only buy a meal from the app he provided.

This small journey taught him a great lesson – about humility, empathy, and his privilege. Others who read his posts also shared their thoughts about how important it is to respect delivery workers and small acts of kindness like smiles or tips.

Finally, the entrepreneur chose discomfort to better understand the reality, which gave him a new perspective on the life, privilege and the power of quietness of Indian gig workers.
