Operation Sindor: Qatar, Spain and other global powers demand downgrade

Global powers called for demotion of tensions on Wednesday (May 7, 2025) as Indian military forces punitive strikes on targets within Pakistan in response to the deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam. Kathari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin jassim al-Thani called Foreign Minister Jaishankar and conveyed the “deep concern” about the rapid transfer after India bombed nine targets within Pakistan on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 (May 7, 2025).

Prior to speaking with Mr Jaishankar, Mr Al-Thani called Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and confirmed that Qatar's full support for “all regional and international efforts aimed at a dialogue and peaceful settlement between the two countries.”

Like Qatar, Spain has also been linked to India and Pakistan and calls for a resolution of the crisis. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called Mr Jashankar and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq dar. “This morning, I spoke with my colleagues from India and Pakistan to promote dialogue and degradation between India and Pakistan. Peace, diplomacy and restraint must prevail,” he said.

These calls from Spain and Qatar were hours before India and Pakistan, when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived here on Wednesday (May 7, 2025).

Mr. Aragic visited Pakistan on 5 May 2025 (5 May 2025), where he met with Army Chief of Staff Asim Munir and called for dialogue with India. Mr. Araghchi will meet with Mr. Jaishankar at noon on Thursday (8 May 2025) and will visit President Droupadi Murmu.

Iran's painful rival Israel supports India's military strike against Operation Sindor, and Israeli ambassador Reuven Azar said: “Israel supports India's right to self-defense. Terrorists should know that there is no place to hide because they are in the case of harmless crimes that are innocent.”

The Taliban government of Afghanistan said in a statement that “further escalation” is not “for the benefit of the region.” “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reaffirmed its belief in security and stability that security and stability serve the collective interests of all countries in the region,” said the Taliban government in Kabul, urging India and Pakistan to “exercise restrictions and resolve their problems through dialogue and diplomacy.”

Mr Jaishankar also spoke with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, who reiterated Tokyo’s condemnation of the Pahalgam attack and “strongly” urging India and Pakistan to exercise restraint. Mr Iwaya expressed “deep concern” about the latest incidents, saying that these incidents “could lead to further retaliation and escalation into a full-scale military conflict”.

“Japan strongly urges India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and stabilize the situation through dialogue on peace and stability in South Asia,” Mr. Iwaya said. The appeal of the Japanese was the full support of India in the fight against terrorism by Nikaga Fukushiro, a visitor from the Japanese House of Representatives. Mr Jaishakar praised Mr Iwaya's gesture and informed him that “the Indian operation on cross-border terrorist infrastructure was discussed this morning”.

Mr. Jaishankar held a special joint call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. He acknowledged France and Germany’s support for the counter-terrorism strike in India, saying: “They appreciated their solidarity and support following the Pahargam terrorist attack. There was discussion to ensure zero tolerance for terrorism.”

Bangladesh's interim government announced in a statement that it is “closely watching” India-Pakistan relations and urged “both sides to take any steps that could further exacerbate the situation”. “In the spirit of regional peace, prosperity and stability, Bangladesh still hopes to eliminate tensions through diplomatic efforts, and peace will ultimately prevail the interests of the people in the region,” Dhaka's Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Operation Sindor's offensive target against Pakistan “makes sense”. “For terrorists, there is no punishment,” Mr Sunak said.
