Initially, a young man was denied access to a passport office for wearing shorts, sparking debate on social media about dress codes for government agencies and a generational gap in proper clothing.
X user Vineeth K released the incident on Monday, which was exposed. He wrote: “Today, a young adult came to the passport office (I was waiting outside). The man reportedly said: “We went to our company office this way.” Why not allow it in the government office? ”
After a brief stalemate, the man’s father, in his 60s, went in and asked for an exception to the passport official, explaining that his son had set out from a distance. The officers allowed young people to join.
Vineeth then quoted security guards: “Some people don’t value our work and office. Who takes office in pajamas? There are women inside and elders inside – what if they feel uncomfortable? The entire generation is spoiled and parents don’t say a word.”
The post quickly gained traction and was divided into opinions. Some users responded to the guard’s view, calling for a minimum standard in public offices, while others slammed the self-evident restrictions that clothing should not define access to services.
The Indian government office did not clearly define the dress codes of visitors, and the Foreign Ministry did not comment on the incident.
The episode reopens conversations about professionalism, social norms, and generational perceptions of respect and etiquette in public institutions.
