A 47-year-old private sector employee from Hyderabad was cheated by a fraudster who was a customer service representative of HDFC Bank.
He recently filed a request with HDFC Bank to increase his credit card limit, according to a complaint filed by the victim. Shortly thereafter, he received a WhatsApp call from someone claiming to represent the bank. The victims believed the appeal was true and followed the instructions provided during the dialogue.
The fraudster sent a link through WhatsApp, and the victim clicked on it. After granting the required permit, the victim found that he had cheated Rs 1,89,779 from his bank account.
He filed a complaint with the cybercrime department of the Hyderabad Police Department. An investigation is underway.
